 One common component of the 11+ exam is the Creative Writing task, Here's a breakdown of what the creative writing task involves and how to prepare:

What is the Creative Writing Task in the 11+?The creative writing section typically asks the student to write a short story, description, or letter based on a given prompt or title. The goal is to assess a child’s:

• Imagination and creativity
• Spelling, punctuation, and grammar
• Sentence structure and  vocabulary
• Ability to structure a narrative (beginning, middle, end)

Prompts examples:

• A title only (e.g.,   "The Storm", "A Strange Visitor")
• A sentence starter  (e.g., "As the door creaked open...")
• A scenario or question   (e.g., "Describe your most exciting day ever.")
• A picture (used less  frequently but possible)

What Examiners will be looking for.

• A clear and interesting opening
• Logical plot development
• Realistic and engaging characters
• Effective use of language      and description
• A satisfying or surprising ending
• Proper spelling, punctuation,      and grammar

Tips for Success 

Plan Before Writing: Take 5 minutes to plan the beginning, middle, and end.

 Use Strong Vocabulary: Include powerful verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. 

Be descriptive: Use descriptive detail and senses (what the character sees, hears, feels). 

Keep it Structured:

o Paragraphs for each part of the story

o Use dialogue if appropriate (with correct punctuation) 

Leave Time to Check: Allocate the last few minutes to review and fix errors.

The task typically takes 20–30 minutes to complete. You may be expected to write 1–2 pages, depending on handwriting size
