At LEAP our A-level and IB Psychology tutoring group sessions can be really beneficial for students looking to improve their understanding of the subject and boost their exam performance. Here are some three main focus in our group sessions:
Structure: The topics are broken down into manageable chunks. For A-level and IB Psychology, we cover all the topics starting with the more challenging topics such as Research Methods, Approaches, Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, and Abnormal Psychology.
Interactive Learning: We use a mix of teaching, group discussions, and research studies. We also encourage students to actively participate and ask questions.
Past Paper Practice: A vital part of exam preparation. We use past papers and practice questions to familiarise students with the exam format and the types of questions that can be asked in the real exam.
Revision Sessions: Focus on revision techniques and memory aids (such as mind maps, flashcards, or mnemonic devices) to help students retain information learnt.
2. Benefits of Group Sessions
Collaborative Learning: Students can share their knowledge, discuss difficult concepts, and learn from one another’s perspectives.
Affordable: Group sessions are more affordable compared to one-on-one tutoring.
Motivation: Group settings create an environment of collective learning, where students can motivate and encourage each other.
3. Tutoring Aims
Tailor to the Curriculum: We adapt the session content to fit the specific A-level or IB Psychology syllabus.
Focus on Key Themes: Highlight key themes such as research methodology, evaluation of studies, and application of theories to real-world situations.
Use Visual Aids: We use visual aids as students find visual aids like diagrams, graphs, and charts helpful in understanding concepts (such as biological processes or cognitive models).

At LEAP our A-level and IB Psychology tutoring one to one sessions can provide a tailored, personalised learning experience for students. It allows us to focus entirely on the individual’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style, which can lead to more effective results. Here’s how we structure and approach these tutoring sessions:
1. Initial Assessment
Understand the Student's Needs: We start with an assessment of what the student already knows and where they might be struggling. For A-level and IB Psychology, we focus on challenging topics such as Research Methods, Approaches, Biological Psychology, and Abnormal Psychology.
Set Specific Goals: We set the student’s goals (e.g., improving grades, preparing for exams, mastering a specific topic) and create a learning plan that addresses these needs.
2. Customised Lesson Plan
Focus on Weak Areas: After assessing the student’s strengths and weaknesses, we create a session plan that prioritises topics or skills they find challenging. If they’re struggling with research methods, we focus on that until it’s mastered before moving on.
Break Down Complex Topics: Psychology can involve abstract concepts (e.g. cognitive processes), therefore we break this down step-by-step and use analogies or real-world examples for clarity.
Incorporate Practice Questions: We provide practice questions from past papers (A-level/IB) so the student become familiar with exam formats. We also review these questions together to understand the reasoning behind correct and incorrect answers.
3. Exam Preparation
Exam Strategy: We teach the student how to approach different types of exam questions. A-level and IB Psychology exams often involve essay writing, so practicing structuring answers clearly and concisely is key.
Time Management: We get the student to practice answering questions under timed conditions. This will help them to get used to managing their time effectively during exams. If the student have access to extra time, we encourage them to use it and don't feel rushed, extra time is given because they need it so use it effectively.
Reinforce Key Evaluation Skills: In both A-level and IB, the ability to critically evaluate studies and theories is essential. We therefore encourage the student to not just describe research but also to analyse and evaluate it with strengths, weaknesses, and real-world applications.
4. Review and Feedback
Summarise Progress: At the end of each session, we review what has been covered, check for understanding, and discuss the next steps. Adjust the pace of the lessons based on the student’s progress.
Homework and Practice: We give targeted homework or extra questions to complete before the next session. And we also encourage the student to do regular revision, especially closer to exam time.
We offer weekly sessions from your chosen Psychology syllabus. You can choose more than one day per week if required as well as change times with advance notice.
